Mavs Sources Detail Deron Williams Thinking
Mike Fisher
DallasBasketball.com
The Mavs have intensified the search for a starting point guard. But when the name of Jeremy Lin comes up, the magic number is '2.' And when the name of Deron Williams comes up, the magic number is '4.' And then there is '1' 'mystery PG' being considered as well. Oh, and a Kevin Durant angle as well. The Premium scoop inside:
The Dallas Mavericks continue their plan in the Asset Management Business, with the desire for a point guard to start alongside newcomers DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthews next on the priority list.
But let's bang out two facts, straight off:
*The Mavs absolutely, positively have NOT "prioritized'' Deron Willams, the overpaid Nets point guard who was, a few years back, Dallas' big-fish target. Sources tell DB.com, in fact, that Williams "is fourth on our list'' of prospective pickups -- and of course that's only in the event that the Nets waive him, as Dallas is obviously unwilling and unable to absorb the two years and .... left on his existing contract.
*So there are four PGs ranked on Dallas' "Available'' board above Deron? Yes. And you can presume that Jeremy Lin, who started his career as a Mavs prospect and is now a Lakers free agent, is in that top group. But the story that "the only way'' Dallas can acquire Lin is via sign-and-trade is false, at least from the perspective of the Mavs front office.
There are two ways, a source tells DB.com, and which way is "to be determined.'' Translation: A sign-and-trade is an option. But so is an outright signing of Lin.
Asset Management. Think about it. Remember it. It applies in "how'' to get Lin (or Mo) as opposed to just "go get 'em!'' And it really applies to Deron.
To be frank: The idea of a Mavs trade for Deron is ... unreal. Bogus, Whatever term you wanna use to deride the idea to your friends it's even under discussion. Fiction. Fraud. Pure BS. All the above.
In practical terms (and almost in absolute ones, assuming you must keep Dirk Parsons DeAndre, Wes and rookie Anderson) it is cap-impossible. Not unlikely, but impossible. You'd have to make all your new guys S&T incoming (which you already know how hard that is) - - which creates a hard cap at the apron (may be as high as $88 mil is the cap lands at $69 mil), and when you add on another $21 mil in Deron's salary, it wont fit.
And besides, no way the Mavs want his contract on their books. ... next year. It's too big and it's too long ($22 mil more in 2016-17) and would absolutely prevent a chase of Kevin Durant or anyone of his ilk in the summer of 2016. Again ... if they want to waive him (see below on that), he becomes a consideration. But not even a high consideration compared to a trio of other ideas.

Devin Harris is a Mav and the return of JJ Barea is in the works. Meanwhile, other roster-filling moves are coming, from the vets-minimum return of reserve swingman Richard Jefferson to Sunday's agreement with high-flying Jazz forward Jeremy Evans (two years the minimum) to hopes that guys like Amare, Rashard Lewis, Charlie Villanueva, Sam Dalembert and the like might be available.
Raymond Felton is here, too. And note that when we talk about the options with him, we always say, "trade, dump, stretch, cut, keep.'' Because yes, you really could keep Felton as he is a viable NBA talent.
But Felton might be needed as a go-away tool as Dallas wishes to "expand'' its cap space. ... or simply because the Mavs can replace him with a superior player.
Mo Williams is assumed to be on the Dallas wish list. Nick Calathes is, too. And Petteri Koponen is worth wondering about when it comes to the possible names on Dallas' "four PGs list'' as we ponder who that other guy could be who ranked above Deron. (Obviously, it could be a trade-for name not presently on any FA list. Our David Lord hears rumblings of movement regarding Cory Joseph. Your mystery man?)

Do the Lakers want to get something if they lose Lin to Dallas? Sure. Do the Nets want to salvage something if they lose Deron? Tough. We shall see, but they are on-record as saying they won't do a buy-out on Williams. And now you know that, at the same time, Dallas isn't very excited about doing a buy-in on Williams, either.[/quote]
