Yao Ming has surgery on toe, out several weeks

HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets proved they couldn't win without Tracy McGrady. Now they will have to prove they can win without Yao Ming.


Yao is expected to miss several weeks after undergoing surgery Monday to clean an infection in his left big toe, the team said.


Rockets team physician Dr. Tom Clanton performed the surgery to clean out an infection in Yao's toe. Yao was diagnosed with osteomyelitis, which is common inflammation of the bone caused by bacteria.


Rockets spokesman Nelson Luis said the surgery was successful and that Yao will require antibiotics and rest for several weeks. He did not have a timetable for Yao's return.


Yao returned home from Los Angeles before the Rockets beat the Lakers 76-74 on Sunday night. He has had a problem with his left big toe for some time, missing two preseason games because it was bothering him.

Ilman Tracya joukkue pelasi siis aivan luokattomasti, mutta olisi joskus mukava nähdä miten joukkue pelaa ilman Mingia

Pilkka osui omaan nilkkaan, pitäisi näköjään vähän varoa mitä toivoo
Swift taitaa nyt siirtyä sentteriksi niin kuin Memphisissä ja Lonny Baxter nostetaan luultavasti rosteriin

Juuri kun tuolla toisessa topiikissa toivoin, että Dion Glover nostettaisinn rosteriin mies veivattiin loukkaantumisen takia (polvivamma). Mutta hyvää on kuitenkin se, että Rockets etsii uusia pelaajia FA-listalta tai mahdollisesti treidillä.

But now the Rockets can add childbirth to the list. Tracy McGrady's fiancée, Clerenda Harris, went into labor Tuesday, and McGrady and all the scoring the Rockets could not afford to lose went to a hospital with her.

Without McGrady and five injured players, the Rockets' offense collapsed in the second half Tuesday, and the Utah Jazz came from behind to cruise to an 82-74 win before a Toyota Center sellout of 18,088.

McGrady arrived in time to be there when Harris gave birth to a son, Laymen Lamar, and rejoined the team in time for its flight to Oklahoma City to play the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets tonight.

Rockets weivasivat John Lucas kolmannen ja Josh Davisin. He tekivät sopimukset Rocketsin kanssa viime perjantaina. Eipä ollut yllätys kun Alstonkin on taas kokoonpanossa. Jon Barry on myös palaamassa kuvioihin loukkaantumisen jäljiltä.

The deadline was fast approaching to where the players on the roster with contracts would be guaranteed through the rest of the season, so both Davis and Lucas were let go. As 10-day deals can officially be signed on Thursday, there is a good chance one of these guys (most likely Lucas) will be brought back.

Rockets forward docked a game check

NEW YORK -- Houston Rockets forward Juwan Howard was suspended one game without pay by the NBA on Saturday for shoving the basketball into the face of Toronto guard Mike James.


James drove toward the basket and was fouled by Howard during the second quarter of Toronto's 112-92 victory Friday night. The players exchanged words before Howard approached James and shoved the ball into his face. James was restrained by his teammates. Both received a technical, and Howard was ejected.


Howard will serve his suspension Sunday night when the Rockets host the Denver Nuggets.

Olen sitä mieltä, että oli hyvä siiirto. Rockets kumminkin tarvitsee hyvän syöttelevän takamiehen ja siihen hommaan Rafer sopii paremmin kuin James. Kun Ming ja Andreson saadaan takaisin niin varmasti rupeaa voittoja tulemaan viime kauden tahtiin.

Turpaan tuli Denverilta niukasti Carmelon viime hetken hypärillä 92-90. Alston pelasi taas todella hyvän pelin, 24/11ast. Loukkaantumisen jälkeen tilastot: 15,3/8,5ast.
Myös Luther Head jatkoi pirteitä esityksiä, 16/5ast/2stl, on nyt rookie-scoring listalla seitsemäs.

HOUSTON -- Houston star Tracy McGrady left Sunday night's game against Denver with a recurrence of severe back spasms.

The 6-foot-9 McGrady, who missed eight games earlier in the season because of back spasms, missed a deep jumper near the top of the key in the final seconds of the first half. He started backpedalling, stopped abruptly, bent over and crumpled to the floor, screaming in pain as the buzzer sounded.


McGrady was lifted onto a stretcher and rolled off the floor, surrounded by several team officials and owner Les Alexander. An ambulance took McGrady to the hospital.

"I heard him moaning and groaning," Alexander said. "It was really sad to see a guy be in that much pain."

Rockets spokesman Nelson Luis said after the game that McGrady was getting an MRI and would be re-evaluated on Monday.


Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy was evasive about McGrady's condition.


"You know what? It's about winning in this league," Van Gundy said. "It's not about trying, that should be a given."


McGrady's doctor reassured Alexander by phone after the game.


"The doctor told me he thinks it's a bad back spasm and hopefully, he'll be OK," Alexander said. "He doesn't think it's anything serious that will keep him out for a long time."


The Rockets are already missing their other star, Yao Ming, who's out at least another month after surgery to remove an infection from his left big toe.


Guards Rafer Alston and Jon Barry recently returned from leg injuries and Derek Anderson remains sidelined with a calf strain. The backcourt trio has missed a total of 45 games this season.


McGrady had topped 30 points in Houston's last five games. He had 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting in the first half against Denver.

"That's sports and we can't do anything about it," Alexander said. "We've got to play with the players we have. What can you do? You have no choice."

T-Mac on pelannut hyvää kautta ja tälläiset loukkaantumiset ovat syvältä, nimimerkillä kokemusta on. Toivotaan että palaa mahd pian. Houstonin tilanne ei muuten kovin valoisalta näytä. Dikembe vetää aika isoja minuutteja aloittavana sentterinä. Stromilen minuutit nousevat tämän jälkeen suht paljon.

Siis Yao ja T-Mac poissa pelistä, kuinka kauan kestää ennen kuin Yao muuten tulee takas pelaamaan, ja sitten kun Rockets-fani löytää sen että mitä sille McGradylle on ennustettu, niin olis kiva tietää.

Ja on kuitenkin vielä puolikuntoinen kun tulee takaisin. Pahoin pelkään ettei tuo kyseinen selkävaiva parane ihan parin viikonkaan levolla..

Mä en kyllä tiedä onko tuossa järkeä, jos McGrady tulee noin pikaisesti takaisin. Ei se paljoa vaadi, että selkä menisi lopullisesti paskaksi, varsinkin jos sen ei anneta parantua pikkuloukkaantumisten välissä. Siitä vaan syntyy älytön kierre ja jonakin päivänä sekin loppuu, ala Bender. T-Mac, kuten Benderkin, on liian nuori, jotta nuo loukkantumiset pääsisivät mahdollisesti päättämään uran. Houston saisi antaa T-Macille vaikka loppukauden vapaaksi selän kuntoutukseen, sillä on hyvin epätodennäköistä, että Rockets noin syvältä enää nousee taistelemaan jostain merkittävästä. Saavatpahan edes lotterypickin (ellei niitä ole treidattu) tältä kaudelta, mikä voi olla ihan jees juttu. Houston voi parhaillaan vain kusta seuraavat pari vuotta tällä hommalla. Itse en tuota riskiä tässä vaiheessa ottaisi.
