What about these guys?

Posted by Fran Fraschilla

Wesley Matthews was not selected in June's NBA draft, yet he plays for the Utah Jazz and has seen action in 55 games, playing more than 20 minutes in 35 of them.

Matthews was a four-year starter for Marquette in arguably the most publicized league in college basketball, the Big East. He played his senior year in what some experts believe to be the most competitive conference in college basketball history. He ended his career as the No. 8 scorer in one of college basketball's most storied programs. And his bloodlines were excellent -- his father played nine seasons in the NBA. How did he get overlooked?

Currently there are a number of players in the college game who are having outstanding careers but are getting no love from NBA teams. Let's look at three of them and break down their chances of making an NBA roster.

Wayne Chism, F, Tennessee

Chism is the current SEC Player of the Week and is averaging 13 points and 7 rebounds. He is three wins away from being the Vols' all-time winningest player and is poised to help Bruce Pearl's club to a fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance. So how do his NBA prospects look at this point?

Well, he doesn't even crack our top 100, and that's probably justified. Chism, a senior, certainly looks like an active and athletic player in the SEC, but, in reality is a 6-foot-9 "below the rim" guy who relies on pump fakes and creating angles in Tennessee's offense to score inside. He has had trouble scoring over length in a league that has big, athletic post players. Recent games against Kentucky and Vanderbilt simulate what he would see in the NBA, and he was not effective in the low post in either game.

Chism, in many ways, is a product of Tennessee's well-executed offense, taking advantage of flex cuts and backscreens to get layups and open jump shots, especially behind the arc. He also trails the fast break and is not hesitant to shoot the 3-pointer in transition, making 34 percent of his 67 attempts this season. And, his lack of ballhandling skills is hidden because he stays within the offense and is rarely in a one-on-one situation away from the basket.

Ultimately, Chism has been a very productive player for the Vols, and he is likely get a chance to show his wares in pre-draft workouts. Unfortunately, I do not think he possesses one particular skill that is NBA-ready.

Greivis Vasquez, G, Maryland

Think about what Vasquez has accomplished at Maryland. He is the only player in ACC history to score 2,000 points, record 700 assists and grab 600 rebounds. He's accomplished those numbers on a team that hasn't exactly surrounded him with outstanding talent, meaning that he has faced the brunt of every opponent's defense every night.

So, while he seems to have the size (6-5), skills and basketball acumen to be an NBA draft selection, he is rated No. 81 on our Big Board, as NBA teams remain skeptical of what he can produce at the next level. I think Vasquez has a chance to make an NBA roster, though.

First of all, he has good size for a point guard, is crafty with the ball and sees the court well. He also makes just enough shots to keep defenses honest when you leave him open. His athleticism is average at best, for the NBA, but he has made up for with his solid skill package.

He has as much freedom as any player in college basketball to create his own plays, but that freedom is a double-edged sword. He gets himself in situations where he tries to do too much. But with his team's limited overall talent, he is forced into making great plays and takes a lot of tough end-of-the-shot-clock attempts.

Last season, Vasquez dropped 35 points on eventual national champion North Carolina in the Terps' upset win. Gary Williams' confidence in Vasquez has paid off again this season as the Terps are riding the Venezuelan's shoulders into the NCAA tournament.

One intangible in Vasquez's favor is his passion for the game. While that passion hasn't endeared him to opposing fans in the ACC, it fuels a very competitive nature that has fit perfectly with his coach's personality. He loves playing and working at the game and he has been coached hard every day for four seasons. Any NBA coach, on the first day of training camp, will not be wondering, "Who coached this guy?" He'll be ready to compete and do whatever it takes to make an NBA roster.

Da'Sean Butler, G/F, West Virginia

Butler is considered an "old-school" player with sound fundamentals and a basketball IQ that belies a young player. On the other hand, it shouldn't be a surprise when you think that he's had the benefit of playing for two great college coaches -- John Beilein and Bob Huggins -- over four seasons. (I happen to know that he was well coached in high school, as well.)

Like Vasquez, Butler is a crafty player who is able to create for teammates and make tough shots despite being an average athlete. While he is not the pure guard that Vasquez is, he has become a primary playmaker in Huggins' five-man motion offense. He sees cutters well and is a solid passer. That's quite an achievement for a guy that arrived in Morgantown as a combo forward.

A mastery of fundamentals has given him excellent footwork, and he's also refined the step-back move to create space for his shot. Butler also moves well in the offense and is an effective catch-and-shoot player. According to Synergy Sports Technology, 65 percent of his shots in the half-court are jump shots and, while he is more accurate off the catch, he can pull-up off the dribble to either hand.

With good strength at 6-7, he can post up smaller players and get to the basket effectively. He draws more than five fouls per 40 minutes, according to kenpom.com, and makes almost 80 percent of his free throws.

If Butler hears his name called on draft night, it will likely be in the second round. Ultimately, he is what I describe as a "no-mistake guy" who can be counted on to be in the right spot on both ends of the court. That may be his greatest attribute. He'd fit into a team that is system-oriented like the Spurs or the Jazz. That's his best chance to make it. Just ask Wesley Matthews.

The Midrange Game

For those of you waiting for Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors to have his breakout game, that finally happened against Maryland on Saturday. Favors had 21 points and 18 rebounds (both career highs) in a disappointing loss. A few more games like that and Favors could move himself quickly back up to the No. 2 spot on our Big Board.

Texas may be a mess on the court, but more and more GMs are touting Avery Bradley as a potential lottery pick this year. Bradley got off to a tough start at Texas and is still inconsistent, but he's having more big games of late. GMs believe he may be the best guard defender in the country and they feel he has the potential to be an explosive scorer. But can he be a point guard? Most feel he won't be a lead guard, but given all the other things he does well, they're not sure it matters.

VCU's Larry Sanders has really hit his stride in conference play of late. This week, Sanders had a 29-point, 13-rebound, 5-block performance against Drexel. He then followed it up with a 15-point, 9-rebound performance against Akron in just 20 minutes of play. Sanders has stayed in virtually the exact same ranking all season; he's fluctuated between 16 and 22 on our Big Board.

Oklahoma's Willie Warren continues to free-fall down the Big Board. He's currently struggling with a case of mono, though that's not why he continues to slide. As more details emerge about Warren and how difficult he's been this year, the more NBA teams are running away. It's one thing to have a bad season. But Warren's season has been catastrophic. Still, given his poor relationship with coach Jeff Capel, NBA scouts expect him to declare for this year's draft. When he does, teams are likely to warm up to him a bit. In a draft that's very weak on talent at the 1, Warren is one of the few players capable of playing that position in the pros.

Don't sleep on BYU's Jimmer Fredette as a potential draft candidate this year. If he were playing at Duke, he'd be mentioned as a potential player of the year candidate. Much like Duke's own Jon Scheyer, he's not the greatest athlete in the world, but he's tough, can really see the floor and he shoots the lights out. "He's really tough and he's a fearless kid," one GM said. "He's going to lead a team. I wish he was a little bit better athlete, but I can't name five better point guards in this draft. He'll find a way to do it at the next level."

BTW, tällä hetkellä kaikissa näkemissäni mockeissa on ykköseksi sijoitettu John Wall. Onko mies tosiaan noin ylivoimainen?

Old Dominion siis voitti CAA:n runkosarjan, ja ens viikolla taitaa alkaa konferenssiturnaus.

ODU on aika varma valinta NCAA Tournamenttiin, kunhan eivät omassa turnauksessa ihan ensinmäisillä kieroksilla tipu...

Ps. Voisiko joku kertoa enemmän korkealle rankatuista New Mexicosta ja Brigham Youngista, jotka tulevat vähän huonommasta konferensista. Pitää myöntää, että itse en ole yhtään peliä kummaltakaan joukkueelta nähnyt, jos vaikka joku viisampii voisi heittää joukkueista vähän analyysia kiitos.

Olen samaa mielta Old Dominionin mahdollisuuksista. Sanoisin etta taistelee seedeista 8-12.

Stock Watch: Head Turner

Posted by Chad Ford

We're nearing the end of the college basketball regular season. NBA scouts are out in force getting their final scouting reports before the conference and NCAA tournaments.

While there aren't many major surprises at this point in the season, here are the players NBA scouts are (or aren't) buzzing about. Also be sure to check out our updated Top 100 and our updated Mock Draft Lottery Machine.

Stock Up

Evan Turner, G/F, Ohio State

It's hard to put into words how hard NBA executives have fallen for Turner. His play since returning from a back injury has been stellar. If John Wall didn't have such superstar potential, Turner would have a legit shot at going No. 1.

Turner's do-it-all game has GMs salivating. They love players who can play three positions, and Turner has proven night in and night out that he'll be able to do that in the pros. His leadership, ballhandling skills, floor vision, scoring ability and rebounding ability should make him comparable to Brandon Roy at the next level.

While teams still have some concern about his deep range, and a few GMs continue to remind me that they'll be taking a close look at his back MRI, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Turner is close to locking down the No. 2 spot in the draft.

DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors could give him a run if the team drafting No. 2 needs a big man. But with Cousins' personality issues and Favors' so-so production, I think Turner gets the nod in virtually every scenario.

Xavier Henry, G, Kansas

Henry rose all the way to No. 5 on our Big Board earlier this year before hitting a major midseason speed bump. Henry's shot stopped falling and his role with the team receded as veterans Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich took over in conference play.

Henry's stock quickly began to slide and scouts questioned whether he had anything else to his game besides a jump shot. Over the past few weeks, though, Henry has finally found his groove again. His shot has started falling and he's started to get a little more aggressive taking the ball to the basket. In key Big 12 matchups against Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma, Henry looked like the most talented Jayhawk on the floor again.

His recent increase in production has put him back into the late-lottery discussion. While he's not ready to crack the top 10 anytime soon, if he can stay hot through the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, he could make it back there by draft night.

Jeff Taylor, F, Vanderbilt

I came into the season very high on Taylor. He's a terrific athlete who can play multiple positions. After a strong end to his freshman campaign, I didn't think it was out of the question that he could be ranked as a lottery pick by now.

Alas, Taylor got off to a slow start in front of a number of NBA scouts at the Maui Invitational and stayed in a funk until February. However, this month he's begun to show the promise we expected before the season.

What's changed is Taylor's aggressiveness. He's taking more shots and, more importantly, putting the ball on the floor and getting to the basket with much more regularity. When he does this, it's hard to stop him. His best game was in a big Vandy win over Tennessee. Taylor went 7-for-12 from the field and a perfect 12-for-12 from the line. He also had a big game against Ole Miss and was good, but not great, against Kentucky.

If Taylor can put up a big performance or two in the tournament, he's the type of player who could shoot up the rankings quickly based on his athletic profile. Right now we have him in the 20s on our Big Board, but there's room for him to go higher.

Stock Down

Solomon Alabi, C, Florida State

Size rises as we get closer to the draft, but lately, Alabi has been sinking. The big man from Africa has his admirers, but lately he hasn't played worthy of a lottery pick. Alabi has scored in double figures just once in the last six games. Even more pathetic, he's averaging fewer than 4 rebounds per game in his last six. While Alabi has his eye on declaring for the NBA this spring, he might want to think twice.

A number of GMs I spoke with no longer have him ranked in their top 14. For someone with so much athletic potential, he might be better off returning to school for his junior season and proving to scouts that he can, at the very least, rebound and block shots.

Jordan Hamilton, F, Texas

There is no question that Hamilton is teeming with talent. He's a Rashard Lewis-type small forward who can let it fly from distance. But Hamilton, more than any other Longhorn, has really hurt his stock this season with poor shot selection and even worse basketball IQ.

Even when Hamilton gets hot (against Oklahoma State and Missouri, for example) the reaction from scouts has been tempered. His bad shots are going in, nothing more.

It will be interesting to see what Hamilton does. From the sound of things, he and coach Rick Barnes don't really see eye-to-eye and he'd like to make the jump. Scouts see him as a potential lottery pick down the road -- but not this year. If he declares now, he could slip all the way to the second round.

Midrange Game

# Syracuse sensation Wesley Johnson has been struggling of late, but scouts aren't too concerned. Two injuries suffered in games in February (a bruised hip and a bruised hand) have cooled him down considerably.

Johnson recently told the New York Times that his shooting hand still swells and it makes it difficult for him to catch the ball. Once he gets healthy again, I'd expect him to return to form. Right now, Johnson looks like a lock for the top 10.

# Marshall big man Hassan Whiteside continues to wow scouts. Whiteside posted his third triple-double of the season, going for 14 points, 11 rebounds and 13 blocks against Central Florida last week.

GMs have been flocking to Marshall games the past few weeks to get a good look at him before the draft. Given his age and his hot draft stock, the word is that he's likely to declare. While he's a bit of a project, it looks like he has a great chance of cracking the top 10. We've had him in the lottery for the past few weeks and he continues to climb.

# UNC forward John Henson may not declare for this year's draft, but lately he has shown why many scouts had him rated as one of the top three talents in this year's freshman class. With Ed Davis out the rest of the season, Henson has stepped in as the starting power forward and has played well. His scoring numbers aren't off the charts, but he delivers in a number of other ways.

The chances are likely that Henson will return to school for his sophomore year. He needs to add a lot of strength and polish to his game. If he does return, expect him to be a top-10 prospect in 2011.

Kiitos!
