50 years have passed since Lakers passed so little
Contrary to popular belief, the Lakers did do some passing Sunday.
Somebody had to inbound the basketball after Boston’s 44 field goals.
At least watching Sunday’s game, as well as the Lakers being surgically dismantled by, of all people, the Sacramento Kings, on Friday, the two-time defending champions have at least changed my mind about one thing.
Earlier in the month, I made my case for the inclusion of new blood, in the form of very qualified youngsters Blake Griffin, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook, on the NBA Western Conference All-Star squad.
Now, I think it’s OK if there are three or four Lakers in the All-Star Game, since defense isn’t requisite for an NBA All-Star Game.
Somebody has to pass the ball, though. I do not believe I have ever seen, or heard of, an NBA game where one team got 10 assists, let alone a home team.
This is not an indictment of Kobe Bryant, who had none. Yeah, I think he shoots too much sometimes — but on Sunday, he probably didn’t shoot enough.

The most unusual number in the box score for Sunday’s Celtics-Lakers game was the “10″ at the bottom of the Lakers’ “Ast” column. That was the team’s lowest assist total in a home game since October 25, 1960 (two weeks before the Kennedy-Nixon presidential election), in the team’s second home game after moving from Minneapolis to LA. In Jerry West’s fourth NBA game, Los Angeles was credited with only five assists on 42 field goals in a 120-118 win over the Knickerbockers.
Yeah, I missed that one. I was 7.
The Lakers rank 10th in average assists in the NBA, just behind the Clippers.
In the Jordan Years in Chicago, Phil Jackson’s Bulls championship teams ranked fourth, second, sixth, fifth, second and fifth in team assists.
Besides needing great players, there are two simple components to championship play: Sharing the basketball, and everyone at least trying on defense. No, I’m not from the Yoda school on this one; I believe that there is a try.
As for the Lakers not being ready to hit the panic button — heck, if they have to make a pass on offense or a switch on defense to do so, even that is going to be a challenge right now.
